Saturday saw a heavily depleted and young Harris squad heading to a cold, damp and overcast Kinross to compete in the 2nd Round of the Scottish Hydro Electric Cup. Without the availability and experience of any forward replacements, and missing their club Captain in Phil Yeaman the outlook was ominous, but Harris weren’t there just to make up the numbers.
The game kicked off with Harris playing towards the pavilion end and Kinross showed early on that it was going to be an afternoon of pressure on the Harris defensive line, when with only 5 minutes on the clock we were force in to conceding a penalty for coming in at the side which Kinross failed to capitalise on.
This signaled a spell of sustained Kinross pressure which saw Harris have only fleeting visits to the Kinross half, although throughout this there was still accurate kicking by both Kenny Clarkson and Adam Wood along with breaking runs from Dave Wright, Sama’an Akel and Peter Bruce, but finally in the 10th minute Kinross took advantage of another penalty on the Harris 22’, shipping the ball to the number 13 who found room to slip through the channel to score at the posts. The try was converted for 7 - 0.
The game then fell in to a spell of end to end pressure with both sides puting together some good backs moves and running play, one of which resulted in a Harris penalty chance in he 30th minute which Kenny knocked wide.
The end of the first half saw a good spell of Harris play with contributions from Peter Bruce, Adam Wood and a 30’ break up the line by Ben Ford. Also great defensive tackling kept Kinross out on more that one occasion.

The second half kicked off and followed the same pattern of pressure as the first, when on 42 minutes Kinross broke from the rear of a ruck just inside their own half and with quick hands, danced through the tackles of the Harris rear guard, before being abruptly stopped by a Dave Wright challenge to the 10 meter line. As the pressure continued to mount Harris put up a resilient defence but when Kinross found no way through by foot they took to the air (England style) and shot over a drop kick to take the score to 10 - 0.
This score obviously woke the Harris from their half time slumber (many minds were still on the Hockey girls!!), as they were not amused and tried to hit straight back with some points of their own! Kenny Clarkson’s kick off fell deep in to the Kinross half where a bit of loose handling by the Kinross backs allowed Snakey to put one of his delicate boots on to the ball sending it out for a lineout just off the 22’. Colin Gourley won the subsequent put in and was driven over the Kinross line by the Harris forwards with one of their best drive of the game, but it came to nothing when the ball was held up. They didn’t have to wait long to get a second try at the line.
Minutes later we were back in the Kinross half and as the ball was spun out from Rory Wares at the back of the scrum, a great piece of back play combined Kenny Clarkson, Sama’an Akel and Mike Dalrymple with Adam Wood on the wing sending him over near the corner to put some points on the board. Kenny Clarkson converted the try. With 53 minutes gone the score was 10 - 7.
Harris made changes on the 60 minute mark to try and get some fresh legs in to the game, problem was that before they had sorted themselves out Kinross were straight through the back line for try number 2. A fine piece of running by the Kinross (13) who had his try converted, 17 - 7.
The Harris heads went down after the second try and the Kinross pressure started to grow..... again. 4 minutes later with a quick ball from the back of the ruck they were through again! The Kinross (14) managed to tie the Harris centre and wing in a knot before breaking free and heading over the line. The conversion was missed but the score still sat at 22 - 7.
Harris lifted their game for the final 10 minutes to try and go out on a high, with some success in a good spell of pressure in the Kinross 10’ with the backs sniping back and forward, up and down the Kinross line, but it wasn’t to be, and in the 75 minute following a lineout midway in to the Harris half the Kinross (2) broke through the defence to score in the corner. The conversion was missed but the damage was done. 27 - 7.
The final minutes saw several injuries force changes in the Harris back line and the final able bodied players took to the pitch to fill the gaps.
All in all a disappointing afternoon, and more the reason for a big performance in the next League Game against Bannockburn.
