A bright shiny - but cold - afternoon welcomed Arbroath to Elliot Road and the game and Harris were fast out of the starting blocks as Adam Wood tested the visitors’ blind side with a dashing break – and in only two minutes they were ahead. Stuart Donald made the break and fast hands by Lewie Fyall put Mark Hogg in at the corner.
And only five minutes later Hogg extended the lead with a penalty and six minutes later Finlay Smart steamed over for a fine try. Arbroath had still not been in the Harris 22 when Ritchie McIver made in three tries for Harris after an outside break.
A few minutes later, Clarkson broke, kicked ahead and Adam Wood was first to the ball The conversion by Hogg made it 25-0 for the home team with 25 minutes played.
As the score suggests, Harris were very much in the driving seat. The forwards were driving forward with both Lewie Fyall and Robin Waugh prominent.
On the half hour mark, ball from a Harris lineout close to the Arbroath line was spun across the width of the park to put in Swany at the corner. Just on half time, the ball again was thrown wide and Swany’s break and inside pass put Adam Wood clear for another good try. Hogg’s kick made it 37-0 at the break.
Although it eventually didn’t count on the day, four kicks had been missed at this stage and this trend was to continue in the second period.
Ritchie McIver was having a great game and only four minutes after the re-start another great run from him saw Jamie Barker power over. And it was McIver again who stormed over minutes later. This was converted by Abbott to make it 49-0 with half an hour to go.
Andy Quinn set off on a mazey run and was unlucky not to score himself, but the points were secured as he fed Barker for his second of the afternoon. A chip and pick up by Wood added another try to the Harris bag and Abbot converted to make it 61-0.
The pattern of the game was beginning to break up at this stage partly due to the replacements both forced and optional and partly because Harris knew that the game was well won.
Arbroath had brought on a strong running centre and he was causing the Harris backs some difficulty by providing a platform for setting up second phase ball. After a long period of pressure on the Harris line, the inevitable happened when very substantial stand-off Gav Dissell forced his way over and his own conversion gave the visitors some consolation to make it 61-7.
The emergence of the Dissell name raised a few eyebrows in Harris ranks and memories of outstanding Harris lock Adrianus A D Dissel (‘Dis’)from the 60s and 70s. Could it be? I think the answer to that one would have to be a resounding “Yes”.
Anyway, Harris pride raised their game again Ritchie McIver powered across the Arbroath after sustained pressure. Abbot’s kick sealed the game to make the final score Harris 68, Arbroath 7.
So, a convincing win with 11 tries scored by six players. Six tries from the forwards and five from the backs and ‘hat-tricks’ from Wood and McIver. Flatmates Barker and McIver accounted for five tries between them. Great game to watch and good scoring practice.
A great win and loads of great spirit in the Club – and through to the next round!
Well done guys!
